Origin: Salik’s Boxing Club, Greenland

With its unforgiving nature, isolated location, and troubled history, Greenland leaves an impression on most who cross its path. The Marked lived in Nuuk for most of their lives and, while their opinions on their old home differ, none of them had an easy childhood.

They got to know each other in Salik’s boxing club, an initiative to help troubled youth in Nuuk. Here they learned to fight, but boxing was only one of the lessons to be learned from the club; discipline, teamwork and control of their powers were at least as important. When their powers emerged, those lessons proved more useful than ever. Just like they had learned to box together, they learned to use their powers together, even testing them in the boxing ring. The boxing club was their sanctuary, and the Marked formed a strong connection through their training.

Until Salik died, his body washing up on shore after a storm on board ship. However, not all of the Marked believed the official story. Mikkelsen, full of grief and anger, was the most vocal in their belief that the Beacons of Purity must be behind it, while Beck just wanted to move on. The boxing club closed down, and without their trainer the group gradually fell apart. Each moved on in their own direction, until Dr Mistry tracked them down and brought them to Mistry Academy.

08: M. Beck // Ice Wall

Power: Forcefields

Beck was born in Denmark and didn’t move to Greenland until they were 12 years old. Their parents loved their new country. They kept talking about how wonderful it was to be closer to nature and living in a small community, but they didn’t seem to notice how much Beck struggled to adjust. Beck, on the other hand, saw what the move did for their parents: how their mother didn’t eat two painkillers for breakfast every morning, how their father drank much less than he used to. So Beck kept their mouth shut about their own issues. Maybe there’s a reason their powers let them create a forcefield between themselves and the world. Beck was heartbroken when the boxing club fell apart. They are desperate to gather the old gang once more.

The only place Christiansen felt like they truly excelled was the boxing club. They were fiercely proud of their accomplishments. They long to reconnect with their old friends, but they struggle with reaching out. Forced to learn how to fend for themselves from a young age, they greatly value independence and are endlessly frustrated by the nature of their powers. They feel useless, unable to do anything but boost others. Can they learn again the pride that they had at the boxing club?

38: A. Peterson // Sialuk

Power: Relieving Pain

Even before their powers emerged, Salik said that Peterson had a healing touch. Peterson is deeply empathetic, with an innate sense for what people need to feel better, whether it’s a hand on the shoulder, a tight hug, or – as is appropriate in a boxing club – a solid punch on the jaw. Preferring to spend as little time as possible with parents who fought constantly, the boxing club became Peterson’s true home. Arriving at Mistry Academy, they are desperately homesick. As hard as their life could be in Nuuk, they felt like they belonged. Carving out a place for themselves is proving harder than Peterson thought.

48: I. Josefsen

Power: Absorb Physical Force

Josefsen was the first to leave the boxing club, even before Salik died. It was after Josefsen’s power, a curious ability to absorb physical force, emerged, and their father jumped at the chance to send Josefsen to a boarding school in Denmark. There, Josefsen always found themselves the odd one out, the poor kid from Greenland with a Mark, and felt completely alone. Now at Mistry Academy, Josefsen is extremely excited to have the gang back together, although they didn’t see how the relationships changed after Salik was gone. Maybe, while Josefsen was away, some things have been broken beyond repair.
